BIO-SPELEOGICAL PROGRAM

Caving
An activity between sport
and scientific discovery.

> Caving exploration is to discover and topography new caves.
For cavers, New Britain is one of the most interesting places in the world because the potholes are unusually large and beautiful and underground rivers are really huge.

> This is a challenge to explore.
The mountains that hide theses caves are very distant from roads and villages, in one of the most wild forests of the world.
First, we must establish a base camp and an advanced camp in the forest. Underground, the commitment is really important because explorers are far from everything.

> The results of this expedition are so rich for the knowledge of our planet that we don't care about all the difficulties.

THE projeCt

Explore...
Our motivation is to discover unknown trails with the immense privilege to be the fisrt people there and to follow the secret flows of water from the tops of mountains down to its resurgence at the bottom of narrow canyons.
In more concrete terms, the objective of the expedition is to have a better knowledge and understanding of both geographical and hydrological Matali sector of the river.

We will first explore one of the most important resurgence of the Matali at the bottom of the gorges and dive the two terminal siphons partially explored in 1980: Bikbik Vuvu (-414 m, 3 km) and Liklik Vuvu (-293 m, 6.8 km ). We expect a network of 800 m deep and a development longer than 15 km which remains to discover, to explore in its full extent and to map.

    > Bikbik Vuvu :
Its entrance is one of the largest known in the world.
It has impressive dimensions: 120 m by 180 m wide to 140 m deep.
In 1980, the explorations ended to 414 m deep on siphon filled with huge tree trunks, witnesses of violent floods during the rainy seasons. The flow was estimated at more than 150 m3 / s during major flood...

    > Liklik Vuvu :
Liklik is more modest in size but more complex.
It develops 6 km of beautiful clean galleries with rich concretions.
Several siphons should be dived to discover other parts of the network.

Prospecting of the area surrounding these two cavities, including the upstream parts, will certainly allow to discover new entrances of the major underground system.
